so you have to keep ur hand on 2nd til u shift to third? No occasionally going 1st to 2nd it pops out as you're letting the clutch out. If it stays in when you let the clutch out it won't pop out while driving. I don't know what type of mileage your transmission's have or what type of life they hav...

Nice car! Yes the starter can be a PIA to remove. By chance did try try a different solenoid first? If you have to pull the starter and doing it without a lift I found removing the front wheel gives you some more room to work when trying to get the top bolt.
