Hello everyone, new to the site and need cobra advice

Post by RAPER »

Hi everyone. I've been browsing this site off and on now for a week or so and I finally registered. I have been soul searching on purchasing another mustang and this has brought me here. I have owned several mustangs over the years and I will always have one in one form or another. I did the unthinkable about two years ago and sold my beloved 10th anniversary 03 Cobra convertable. It was my baby and it killed me to sell it, but due to financial reasons and life changes, it had to happen. I did end up picking up a "project 95 gt" just so I could feel somewhat normal about a year ago but I have grown tired of it and I want something that means something to me. I'm at a good point in my life again and now is the time for me to look for the car I want

With that said, I have decided to look for a 93 Cobra now. I have owned several foxes, but never a cobra and I have always been partial to the foxes so a Cobra seems like a great fit. I'll list my wants and goals to help with my questions

This will not be a daily driver but It will be driven. My last Cobra I owned for 6 yrs and put on 15k miles. I am by no way looking for a garage queen

I am looking for something that is going to keep its value, and possibly be worth something in the future. Something to take to car shows and cruize nights and become part of the family

I don't exactly care what mods have previously been done, but I am one of those people that do mod their cars so every time I drive it, I'm driving exactly what I want.. So obviously I don't want to ruin a prestine stock car

Mileage isn't a huge concern....

But the overall shape of the car is.. I want a well taken care of interior and exterior. I dont want to deal with needing repairs in this area. I'd rather spend my money on gas, tires, and go fast parts..lol

I want AC, airbags, and the rest of the normal things to function as they should

I love to race.. Drag and roadcourse.. No wheel to wheel, but time trials for sure

I plan on adding the needed mods to get the car to perform where I want it. I know some of you may have just gasped at that..lol.. but don't worry.. I wont be a tool and take it "beyond" tastefull. probally a simple supercharger or maybe a head and cam swap.. The taste of HP from my 03 has scar'd me for life i'm afraid :headbang:

Here are my ?'s

1. how does mileage effect the cars value generally.. generally the differance between a 50k mile cobar, and a 125k mile cobra assuming all other things are equal

2. MODS... how important are the oem parts to have incase of resale. How much cheaper should a mild modded cobra be from a box stock beauty

3. Color.. does it actually have any bearing on value??? I know the numbers as far a production units and teal is more rare but typically does one fetch more money

4. PRICE... I would really like to pick something up for around 10k.. I'm flexible but I'm not looking for a 20k garage queen

I want some honest opinions on what I should be looking at. Obviously I don't want to take a really sweet box stock car and mod it or take away from the very few origional cars out there, but I don't want some haggard or clapped out cobra beater either. I would rather stay away from a salvaged titled car too. Just a clean car that is pleasing to the eyes that is begging to be enjoyed and driven.

I live in northern IL if it helps with location.

I would say be patient and you will find what you are looking for. For 10k I would say your looking at something between 60 and 110k miles.

I got lucky and picked mine up for 8300 with 69k miles. All stock except for wheels and exhaust. I drive it once every week or so. They are out there and you will find one. There was a black/black in san diego that had 90k. I think the guy wanted 12k for it but I bet he could be talked down.

try to find as close to stock as possible, mod it and keep the oem parts. In resale you will get more for a stock one than a modded one. Garage queens are nice, at a show, but the best thing about these cars is driving them.

Welcome to the site. Getting right to the point, it's good that you mentioned mileage is not a concern because if you're looking to pick up a 93 Cobra for around $10K, it's gonna be higher mileage or need some work or both. Don't worry about ruining a pristine stock Cobra with mods. You're not gonna find a pristine condition Cobra at that price level.

Based on your description of the kind of Cobra you're looking for, you've described a nice driver without the need for repairs with 50K-80K miles. For one like this, you'll generally spend $12K to $15K for Cobras with or without some tasteful mods. And based on the way the market seems to be trending for 93 Cobras, you may have a hard time finding clean ones at the low end of that price range, especially for Cobras with clean titles, original paint, all VIN tags, etc.

The good news is there are a lot out there to choose from and with patience, good deals can be had. Good luck in your search.

BTW, being scarred for life due to excessive horsepower is a wonderful thing! 8)

I honestly would have red as a last choice on color if all others where available. Are any of you familiar with performance red?? I think I seen one one time and it seemed similar to that color.. I had a performance red 00 GT I purchased new back in the day and I liked that color at the time. That teal seems to be calling me though

Yea.. I would expect 10k to buy a 100k+ mileage car. (No wrecks and a clean title)

If you find one supercharged you might get a better deal then buying one stock or even semi stock. The more mods that are on these cars... the more it degrades the value.

ahh.. sweet.. I really like the performance/vibrant red color.

Yea, wouldn't mind picking one up that was already molested by the previous owners. Might save me some time and money. I'm one of those people that don't let anyone work on their car. I am kind of anal retentive that way so it's a bit of a conflict there. I'll just keep my eyes open for the right car. I'm not in a huge hurry right now seeing how there is snow on the ground here

lol... To each there own.

I guess the point to my statement was that there are more buyers looking to keep a 93 Cobra Stock then there are wanting to mod the shit out of them.

Of course you gentlemen, would be the exception. :-)

Just buy one of each

It is more fun blowing the doors off a new vette in a modded then trying to keep up with a Honda accord
