Opal Gray map pockets in NOS Ford vinyl
One of the restoration shops has access to the NOS Opal Gray vinyl that Ford used in the 93 Mustang Cobra. They sent me a small swatch and it is an awesome match! I am having a set of map pockets made from the material. I had to buy a yard of the material, and then they will have the map pockets fabricated. It is pricey but the color matches so much better than the TMI or ACME Opal Gray! I will post pics when they are done. I tried to find NOS Map Pockets and struck out... so I was really happy to find a way to at least have them made from the NOS vinyl material!

Both sets of the TMI Opal gray ones I have bought have matched perfect. Plan to buy another set for my teal I am working on now. I have yet to fing a shop that can make the map pockets correctly. Let us know what yours look like when done. I get my NOS material from SMS Fabrics.

The TMI set I got my hands on was off a bit on the color, it seemed a bit bluish when next to areas of my original interior. The pocket was well built, though, the folds & stuff were pretty good. The ACME was total crap - color way off and the build looked ugly.

Keep in mind that interior parts fade over time, not to mention that even brand new the material could vary in shades straight from Ford.
That's the big pain of trying to match interior parts.

I hear you. That is why I got a swatch from the actual yard of material that will be used to make mine before I agreed to pay for the fabrication. If it was a poor match I would have just been out the cash for a yard of vinyl. When I compared the swatch to various areas of my interior I was stoked - best match I have had so far.

Yes they do fade, both my sets matched excellent, But both my cars had tinted windows, so thay may have helped. I just think for $95 a set for the TMI one's is way better than Buying material, and paying someone big money to make them. Especially on a ware and tare item.
Re: Opal Gray map pockets in NOS Ford vinyl
If mine were still a daily driver I would agree, but I am doing a restoration and want to get it cherried out a bit. It is a weekend toy for me now, so the wear & tear is minimal. I bought it new in 93 and had it as my daily driver for a number of years but now it is "retired" and only goes out on weekend drives here & there.aaronlstiles wrote:Yes they do fade, both my sets matched excellent, But both my cars had tinted windows, so thay may have helped. One other cool thing - looking through my garage I found my original plug wire set with the 93 date codes! I always stashed everything I took off that car if it looked re-usable, so I knew they were around, but it took me a while to run across the right box. But I have them now and they look great! They came off at 12,000 miles and are very clean, so they will now go back on when I have the car ready for viewing.

What types of things have you fabricated / had fabbed from the NOS vinyl? How did it work out?aaronlstiles wrote:Both sets of the TMI Opal gray ones I have bought have matched perfect. One thing I did that was smart was that I had the windows tinted with a good UV blocking film right away after purchase, and I covered the seats and dash from the beginning (had dash cover & seat covers made that fit very well & had the COBRA red text on them... wasn't a fan of the looks, especially of the dash cover, but my dash is still nearly pristine and the cover can be taken off in a matter of a minute). So, the interior is quite nice with the exception of three items - the aforementioned map pockets (that was just a bad design, IMO), the center console arm rest (again, that was designed so poorly that the padding & cover are almost destined to disengage and get ugly), and the arm rests on the doors. I have the map pockets covered now (hopefully the fabrication will come out good), I have a NOS opal gray center console cover & NOS plastic backing plate & NOS compartment, so that is covered as well. Now I need to find the replacement arm rests in Opal Gray. Those have been a tough nut to crack. The ones I have are not horrible, but they are definitely used & show signs of wear, so I am scrounging to see if I can find some NOS replacements or an aftermarket repro that is a good match. So far no joy on that one.
I was adding up my purchases over the past couple of months and I am well over 2 K now. Hopefully it will be worth it with regard to eventual value of the car. I plan on keeping the car for a long time so it is worth it to me. When I go tits up I will give the car to my daughter in my will, so maybe she will inherit something of pretty high value if the 93 Cobra appreciates like some of the earlier limited run Mustangs. I hope so.
The cost of the restoration is a bit more than I originally planned, since I keep finding things that could be a little better if I find a NOS replacement and then I find the piece somewhere, but fukk it. I have the money, I love the car, so why not. We aren't called car nuts for being entirely rational about our rides, ya know?

Yes, here is to being a car nut... or a fuknut!
I want to get one of the boards eventually. I just keep finding parts for the car that take up my money first. Once I have the resto complete maybe one will show up on fleabay...
I also checked out the images, and I realized I have all of them in different brochures and posters. Maybe I will get a graphics arts weenie from work to try & do one on our large format scanner & plotter. They could do it as a poster and then mount it to a board. Not nearly as cool as an original but it would still look good on my wall!

The original wires are still on mine today.....in fact they've never been off the car since I took delivery on May 25, 1993.BrentE wrote:.....
