Help o Cobra R

Post by wazana9050 »

Hello All,

I'm new and this is my first post.

I'm looking to buy a Cobra R and live in CA, any issues buying a car that wasn't originally sold in CA?

I'm also looking to buy a low mile regular Cobra - I'm not an investor, but a true car guy and have wanted these since high school. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Yeah, I know, they don't come cheap. Any help on the CA matter?

That poster doesn't seem to be here much, unless trying to sell something.

Good luck in your quest, sadly for both of us (looking to buy) the values have continued to rise. Seems like the days of them being in the 40's are past (low mile perfect cars).

Way, way past. Even for higher mileage, not perfect examples. Which is not surprising considering Ford only made 107 of them.

I'm in Cali and bought a California Cobra. I think the smog is different so I wanted to make sure mine would pass. There's an R on eBay right now. GET IT.

What part are you in?

Im in southern Cali - Chatsworth area.

The one on eBay from Duffy's? They want $90K.

What do you know about a non-ca car being registered in CA, is it an issue?

If the non-CA car has emissions equipment that only meets federal standards (49-state vehicle) rather than being CA-certified (50 state vehicle) you will have a smog/registration issue.

Does the age of the car affect the emissions requirements?

^^^

Yes. But the smog exemption for age in CA is ridiculous. To be exempt, a gasoline-powered car must be 1975 model year or older.

Thanks - is there a way to know if it's 50 state legal? What's the equipment? Does the VIN give indication?

Oh I know, that's how long I've been looking, but have been distracted by other cars.

Don't hold me to this (as I live in a state with reasonable emissions regs and don't have to worry about smog tests and catalytic converters!), but I believe that only 93 Cobras with "California Emissions" or something similar on their window stickers will get thru today's CA smog regs with no problems. The VIN will not provide an indication.

The good news is if you can provide the VIN of a car you may be interested in, the Admin will be able to tell you the original selling dealer of the car. If it's a CA dealer, you're in luck. You may even be OK with a car originally sold in a neighboring state (AZ, NV, OR). Good luck!
