Best 5 Lug Conversion Kit

Post by JohnLynch »

I am thinking of conoverting my notch to 5 lug, I was told if I got the regular 5 lug kit for fox mustangs I would still be limited on what 5 lug wheels I could run, but if I found SN95 5 lugs in a salvage yard the sky would be the limit.....
Anyone know the truth to this? Or have 5 lugs you want to sell me?

Thanks

I have a complete rear end out of a 97 Cobra and front spindles from a 94/95 with the 97 cobra brakes. It allows me to run any SN95 and maybe later wheel. I currently have 98 Cobra wheels on my 93 Cobra. The conversion was done by the previous owner, so I'm not too sure on the specifics, but I do know the rear end is a direct drop in.

The five lug kit just converts the pattern to five lug, but obviously gives no braking improvements. What they are telling you is that the Ranger rotors in this kit retain the stock grease cap dimensions, which stick out too far for many popular wheels. So you can run a Cobra R for example, but the center emblem will have to be left off because the grease cap needs to be in the same spot.

The SN95 rotors are different, and have a lower profile cap that allows about any five lug wheel to fit. If you go with these spindles, find a set of '94-'95 to use, as the '96-up have lower steering arms to match the lower rack position on the modular K member that those cars have. I've heard that offset rack bushings can help a bit but not eliminate all the bump steer that the later spindles cause.

Up front: 94 or 95 spindles only so you don't change your track width. Then it's your choice if you want to stay cheap and use some 95 GT calipers, or go big and get some new mach 1 or cobra calipers.

Rear: http://www.northracecars.com/Brakes.html Use of of their kits depending on if you want V6/GT rear brakes or cobra. Then either buy the rotors/calipers from them or source them elsewhere new or used.

Under the hood, I'm staying out of this one. You'll need to upgrade the brake booster and master cylinder. The 93 cobra units, 95 GT, etc are all different, and will get a different brake feel.

That's the easy run down. Now comes all the small stuff. You'll need a proportional valve, and some new brakes lines for under the hood varying on which master cylinder you go with. Braided lines to the calipers always a plus while you're in there. You might as well replace the ball joints while things are apart. You'll need to cut/reflair the rear hard lines on the 8.8 so they are shorter. You'll need at least one new e-brake line, in addition to the brackets that hold the lines to the LCAs, and some new c-clips to hold the lines to the calipers. You may need to modify the stock e-brake handle.

....that should be about 98% of things. :)

It's all fresh in my head because I have all the parts and am dealing with the install myself right now.

I went with 95 spindles, 04 cobra spec front brakes with the NRC brackets to use 98 rear cobra brakes. I have all braided lines, new 93 cobra brake booster, new 95 GT master cylinder, new MM LCAs, new MM c/c plates, new a-arms, new H&R race springs, new bilsteins, and she'll be riding on 10th anniversary wheels. This car will feel like a brand new car here shortly.

Boneyards your best bet.
'83-'92 Ranger/Bronco II Left (driver) side axle (29-5/32") from a 4cyl or 3.0L V-6 with the 7.5" rear end,
'86-'97 Aerostar RIGHT side (passenger) axles (29-5/32")

Then Just go to the parts store and order 91 lincoln Mark VII Front Rotors

You are limited for wheel options. You can only run specifics. The 99 and newer had a bigger offset so if you try them they will rub on the inside.

All really depends what you are lookin to do and spend. If the car isn't already rear disc and you are gonna convert it thats a whole other can of worms with the distribution block....

The northracecar stuff is nice and I too used it on my 86 notch

Ford use to sell the awesome M2300 kit for about $2,100.

Here's a similar for $2,800, plus whatever a shop charges for install: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1987-93-Mustang ... 05&vxp=mtr
