Tires

What are you guys running for tires? If Goodyear still sold GCS's in the stock Cobra size, I'd run another set, but those days are over....

I have found some tires made by Fulda and are sold thru NTB (National Tire and Battery) they are the Quantum ELite 245 45 ZR17 95W. They were about $125 -$150 each. The tread pattern is very agressive and works great for wet road handling.
The tread pattern appears to be the same as the Goodyear Eagle F1. I don't know what state you live in but Tire Kingdom is connected with NTB in some way.
You can go the the web site for Filda, I think it is www.fuldatire.com.

Good luck with your search.
I have also considered Falken and Hancook. I had a 93 GT convertible and I put on Dunlop Sport AS2 245 45 16's and they were a good rain tire with good treadwear.
My suggestion is, however, if you are a road/track type of owner, then pay the $200-$300 for sticky, low treadwear tires and have a great time knowing that in 15,000 to 20,000 miles you will be buying another set of tires.
Good luck with your selection.

Fulda can be bought at tire Kingdom, if they are where you live.

I ran 245/50/ZR16 on my GT, here are the pics. These wheels are also for sale with the tires on them. The tires have 3,500 miles or less on them!

Nitto 555 are absolutely great tires for the money. Ride good, grip good, and last a fair amount of miles. We run them on my 93 and my wife's 01 cobra. I will put them on our focus and SVO as well.

I opted for the Goodyear Eagle F1 . Goodyear makes them in the original size, 245/45ZR17. Expect about 50k from these tires as the compound is a little different from the Gatorback version that came as original equipment when the Cobra was new.

So far as ride is concerned with these tires - A+
So far as road noise is concerned - A+
So far as wet traction is concerned - A+
So far as dry traction is concerned - A

I'll throw in a vote for the NT555's. Good quality and reasonable prices. Throw some Nitto Drag Radials on the back and you will hook like crazy.

No drag radials needed here. My car doesn't see track duty any longer. Goodyear performance tires have always been high priced. I just about S'd myself when I replaced the original tires back in 94. 363 list, but I'll give them to you for 250 each.... and that was for GSC's.... Good all around tire, but not available any longer. Too bad, I'd buy another set....

Ford was still using the the old eagles on the GTs until just a couple of years ago. I bought three sets of pull offs . The last set I bought had a manufacture date of 2003. And they will last me a long time since the cars are stored indoors, and I are probably driven less than 150 miles a year.

Hi Folks -

The Goodyear 245/45-ZR17 Gatorback was the OE tire on the '93 Cobra. Not the GSC. The Gatorback is a different tire/tread pattern from the GSC. The Gatorback is still available from the Tire Rack ($152 in the most recent...Mar 06...Road & Track Magazine.)

Although Gatorbacks are not the latest in terms of grip, handling, etc, they're the correct OE tire and offer good life.......I'm on my 3rd set @ 196,000 miles, with the longest set getting 78,000 miles!

Best Regards,

Tires

Post by rufus »

Grandma - not always......I've gotten away with some pretty wild things.....but nothing I care to admit to here.

During the time I was commuting 85 miles each way to work on I-95, droning along at 75-80 mph. I'm sure that continually running at very small tire slip angles on the interstate helps to minimize wear. I'm also diligent about tire pressures, and always keep them at least 3-4 psi over the recommended 30 psi. My first set lasted 50,000 miles.

Best Regards,
Bob S.
