Converting black interior back to grey

Post by 97CasperCobra »

So I have the infamous #4499 Teal Cobra, which in previous Owner's hands, was converted from grey interior to black, along with a pair of non-Cobra seats. I removed the door panels and center console and in the process or replacing all door/window hardware before I put new grey door panels on.

Since I'm fairly new to the Fox-body Mustang (I also own a '97 Cobra undergoing a Coyote swap), my question is what other interior parts (dashboard, steering column, misc panels) were originally grey and which were black??

As for the seats, I understand these are somewhat of a rare find so I will most likely replace the worn & torn existing seats with something from LMR that's budget friendly while I search for stock 93 grey Cobra seats.

I'm welcome to thoughts and advise....

Thanks in advance.

Black parts - parking brake handle, shifter, shifter boot, plastic piece surrounding shifter boot, HVAC & radio panel, upper half of dashboard, instrument panel, steering wheel, power lock/window switches & surrounding trim piece, door handles & surrounding trim pieces

Gray parts - seats, lower half of dash board & glove box door, door panels/arm rests/map pockets (thin piece of upper gray panels is black), all carpeting, floor mats, headliner (gray cloth in non-sunroof cars), all rear & hatch trim panels, hatch carpeting and hatch cargo cover.

Good luck!

If all your black pieces are in good shape, you should be able to sell them off and help "fund" your interior swap. A lot of work ahead of you.... Good luck and take your time. :headbang:

Thanks guys, appreciate the help.
Most the interior parts are not salvageable, door panels are torn, center console has tabs broken off, missing ashtray, broken ash tray door, etc.

Might be best to find a parts car that has decent interior, finding every piece might be time consuming.

I'm going to get what I can from LMR, then I'll search for parts from a donor...

Quite the project!

I'm glad you are returning it to stock. I've seen quite a bit of Opal Grey interior parts on eBay. You should not have a problem getting the pieces.

Sometimes finding the parts is not the problem. It's finding them for sale at a reasonable price.

I personally would avoid new repro parts if you can. As stated, colors can be just a bit off. I also really prefer a period correct feel of the car. In other words, if the car is a nice driver, and not a concourse restored car, I liked the parts I put on to look ~20 years old. Not beat, of course, but not shiny new either.

Thanks guys, the car has approx. 186k miles on her and plenty of things to fix. Paint is about a 7/10. Just happy to have a teal '93 and want to get it back to how it should look. It's a good driver, just needs a lot of TLC.
