Some progress made…





Looking a little better than the crusty lump that was pulled…




These things take a while. Everything was bead blasted and / or painted, all the bolts were blasted and black oxide coated, etc.. A few more things to do, a/c unit, alternator, upper manifold. But, some progress.

As this will never be "Concours Original" and I probably won't be getting any calls from Pebble Beach", I couldn't resist a little bling.
I've always been a sucker for nice valve covers, especially as the OEM covers are pretty underwhelming. It's a shame they'll be mostly hidden when everything is bolted back on.

The headers are Bassani equal length shorty, ceramic coated. They're not cheap but in my research they're the only one's everyone seems to say fit with no interference and have decent access to the plugs. The equal length for a tiny nudge of performance and a touch of that F1 look.
I thought about bead blast and painting the manifold as I did the other aluminum parts, but I ended up cleaning it up with fine wire brushes in a die grinder then coating with 'Shark Hyde" that Eastwood sells. It doesn't have the "sand cast" look it had originally, but more of a vintage "hand polished many times" look.

I ordered a Casswell 'Copy-Cad" plating kit for the silver cad plated parts, [mostly some bolt but also some brackets and their Gold Cad, also for bolts and brackets. Their black oxide kit work pretty well, so I thought I would give the other plating a shot.

I haven't started the clean, sand, primer, paint the engine compartment yet, but as I finish up the engine, I won't be able to put that off too much longer.

Thanks for the post, Im doing something a little similar to what you did, my car is a driver as well. My car has a blower and other motor work done by the previous owner, Im pulling mine just to make sure everything is good internally, So while its out fresh rings and bearings and a face lift.

Thanks for the info on the paints you used.

Upper Intake;

As the upper intake was originally powder coated I thought about taking somewhere and having it redone, but the surface was intact, just dingy. I tried compound and wax but that didn't do it.

I ended up glass beading it. Not enough to really remove the powder coat, just enough to scuff up the surface and remove any grime. I basically just held the gun about 6" from the part. I used corks and plugs to seal all the opening.

You probably could sand it, but the "pebbled" type finish would make it difficult to get in the low spots.
If sanding I think I would use a maroon scotch bright with Pre, or some other pre-paint solvent.

Anyway, a coat of Eastwood 2K epoxy primer and I was ready for topcoat.

Again, after some experimentation, I found a very good match for the OEM finish. It's a tough color to match as it's a slightly dark silver but with almost no metal flake. What flake there is, is very tiny.

Anyhow, "Rust-Oleum Silver Engine Enamel" was a really good match.




I think it turned out pretty nice. I thought about smoothing some of the rough spots and lumps in the casting, but then thought that's how it was to begin with so I resisted the urge.
I'll soon be running out of things to do and will have to tackle the engine compartment before long… Not sure why I'm avoiding it. Guess I need to just jump right in.

Sorry for the lack of reported progress. I got sidetracked on Jan 1 by a new purchase. It was cheap but every part I look at seems to be worn out. Oh well, all garage time is good time.

Well,
I have to say this is a bit bizarre. My last post was 1/28/16. Well, the Mustang got put on the back burner, [Jeep and due to an old boat acquisition].

The Mustang came back into the shop Friday night when a few buddies were here beer drinking and lie telling. I got them to help me push her in and dang, one day short of a year.
At least I can tell my friends it hasn't sat for a year, 364 days maybe but not a year!

Now lets see if I can make some progress before boating season.
The current goal is to move all the under hood wiring out of the way, remove the front fascia and paint the engine compartment.
It's good to be back,
