Starter hanging up on start up

Post by Tunedout »

I replaced starter thinking it would fix the problem but it still hangs up on start up for a few seconds. Teeth on flywheel look fine. Anybody have this issue before?

What do you mean by "hanging"?
Odds are your starter relay is either going bad or not grounded properly.

I mean like it sounds like the starter is still engaged longer then it should be. I have replaced starter and solenoid on fender already and checked connection all around

Wired wrong at the solenoid... I just had to move the wire over on mine to fix it.I am willing to bet that is it.

That still sounds like its not grounded properly. Even if one of the two mount bolts is not grounded properly against the fender wall or stripped out, it will cause the solenoid to hang.

Take some di-electric grease and place it between the fender, bolts, and hole of the fender wall. See if that doesn't help.

Just a thought.

I did swap wires side to side on solenoid and it didn't change , this car has done this every since I got it. So maybe the previous owner hooked it all up wrong . But I'm not sure which all wires belong on each side. I've searched online and the pictures that I've found really don't help me.

It just has one bolt holding solenoid to fender

Everything plus the main power wire (FROM THE BATTERY) goes to one post. The Small connector that is the ignition signal goes to the top "mini post". The thick wire that runs to the starter should sits by itself on the other main post.

(A picture would be much better)

Well I got two bolts holding solenoid in now and it didn't fix the issue.

Your diagram is spot on and a little different then I described above...

Heres how mine is setup. (Looks like it has two signal wires in this case)
