Would you change the interior color?

Post by Kilrgt »

Hi all, ok let me first start by saying changing the interior color is my last option , let me explain. my cobra is is great shape and mostly orginal other then the motor work, the usual SC, cam, heads ect ect.

my goal with the car is to make it 100% factory, this brings me to my question. The pervious owner installed some gauges on the dash with a monster tach in a pod, the results is drilled holes and of course a aftermaket head unit resulting in more holes. Replace the dash right ,no big deal..... except i cant find a opal grey anywhere. I am finding lots of Titanium and even black but not a single opal. im in canada so must wont ship here, so if you were in my position would you change the color? i guess im just looking for thoughts ,iv thought about painting it but i really dont know if my factory stuff is faded at all and i really dont want to make it worse

    thanks!

If your goal is to make it 100% factory then hold off on finding the original color.

Considering the extensive work and parts you'll need to fully convert a grey interior to black, including dash, center console, seats, door panels, carpeting, and plastic trim pieces, I'd continue your search.

Thats the thing, I have found many complete full Interiors in Titanium cheap and readily available, ill hold off for a opal gray for another month or two but if i cant find a good clean
one im leaning towards the swap out, its not that much work and can be done pretty quickly , iv done it a few times.

Actually for me it depends on the exterior of your car.

If you own a Black or Red Cobra, I'd stick with the Opal Grey....

If you own a Teal ... It may be worth putting the black interior in there.

Whatever you decide, AVOID painting it because the paint will wear off.

I'd keep the search going. Opal was a color unique to 93, so will be harder to find.

In the meanwhile, I'd go with patching the holes with a vinyl repair kit and do some spot touch up work/blend around the former holes...

I used vinyl paint to paint a red seat black on a friends BMW GS motorcycle. My friend put about 5,000 miles on the bike so far and the paint has yet to wear off. On a motorcycle seat!

I'll look tomorrow for the brand of the paint but I know it was not inexpensive. It might have been $50-60 for the kit. It was a 3 step process that had to be followed very carefully, but it definitely worked.

I guess the real question would be if they had a color that matched to opal gray.

A motorcycle seat is one thing. But attempting a three-step process that needs to be carefully followed to paint the factory seats of a Cobra? Sounds like a nightmare project.

I think we are talking about the dash, not the seats. At least I am. :-)

Astute observation, 2771. Painting the dash with a three-step process that needs to be carefully followed sounds like a nightmare project.

    Cleaner/primer/paint.

My suggestion earlier was a vinyl repair kit (dash repair kit). You basically fill the holes with a material that you mix the color to match. Much easier than doing the whole dash.

I agree with others I would hold out for the correct color, meanwhile a subtle fix like recommended could make the holes not such an eye sore.Another simple thing you could try depending on location and hole size of course but they make smaller sized push type fasteners that you could paint to match and cover the holes.Similar to what some do with their holes in their front bumper covers. This would just be a temporary fix but might not draw attention like the holes do.
