Type of Gas

Post by lukewood2 »

Since I've had my car I've always put 91 in it. What are you guys running for stock engines? Is it worth it or should I go to 87?

I always try to run the highest grade available, I have heard guys talk about running 87 and such. Here is some previous conversation about the grade of gas: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=52&hilit=grade+of+gas

Years ago, 93 octane gas had superior detergents, etc. and was better quality than 87 or 91. Today, all grades of gas are the same from a quality and refining standpoint. Today, you should use whatever grade is recommended by the car manufacturer and not have to worry about the quality of the gas. For a stock 5.0 (Cobra or LX/GT), 87 is perfectly fine. Anything else, and you're wasting money.

Also, 87 octane is what's recommended in the Owners Manual of these cars.

Thanks man. Going to switch it up and see what happens. Gas isn't cheap in Cali...

If your car has stock timing and isn't chipped, 87 is fine. If timing has been bumped to 14° or car is chipped, you need to stick with 93 octane.

More important than octane, to me, is having 100% gas, as opposed to ethanol blend...

Newer cars with knock sensors, however, DO take advantage of 93 octane with higher HP output and sometimes better gas mileage. I run 93 in my ecoboost f150 (I tow a lot and it is actually worth 15hp or so). I also run 93 in our turbo Sonata, as I like to hit the skinny pedal occasionally. :-)
