How to repaint but leave VIN tags...?

Post by Goose17 »

Question for the gurus:

How does one repaint a Fox and keep the VIN tags in place? No, I am not repainting my 93, but I have another Fox that will eventually get restored. It has the VIN tags just like our 93's.

You just have to tape them up.

Wouldn't the tape lines be blantanly obvious?

I am not trying to hide the fact that my 89 will be painted - I will have it painted smooth + clearcoat as opposed to the factory orange peel, 1-step paint for that year. I just want it to look good.

If your not changing the color, you might be able to steer somewhat clear of the areas where they are. I would rather have the originals looking blatantly masked off, vs using reproduction tags.

Damn, Goose! For a guy that practically walks on water in that fancy garage of yours, I'm surprised you can't figure out how to protect your VIN tags during a repaint. ;)

Can you tell the difference between original and the repo tags?

Wouldn't want to get taken on a deal by a car with repo tags that has been rebuilt or repaired.

Get new one for the front fascia and rear bumper. All the other should be hidden enough that they will not be disturbed. You want to completely strip the urethane front and rears because these were never properly prepped by Ford in the first place. They need to be stripped down to raw plastic, shot with sealant, primer then painted.

Has anyone ever tried to get paint off the vin stickers once they were already painted because some idiot didnt tape them? I heard a rag and paint thinner but I have never tried.

My painter has done it for me in the past and you cannot tell it. There is already an edge to the factory stickers just tape them up properly and you will not tell it from the factory edge unless you don't want an edge at all then just tape them up for the base coat and remove and clear over them.

That may work to an extent but the thinner will be to harsh and damage them eventually. Loosen it up with thinner not working it alot and then try mineral spirits.

Hey Goose, what do you have on your floor? I just purchased a house and I want to coat my garage floor before I move in, any suggestions?

Never mine, I just saw you video. Great looking Garage.

It is metallic epoxy. Here is a thread I did on it:
