New Dyno Numbers: Stock(ish) 1993 Cobra 80K mi- mustang dyno

Just some trivia for the 1993 Cobra faithful…

I just sorted through a drivability problem and got the car running good. It has fresh sensors, a fresh tune up and had a dose of Lucas. So, I thought it was a good time to get it on the dyno.

Here are a few minor deviations from stock that could impact numbers from showroom stock:

1) K & N panel filter
2) Minus the intake silencer
3) Underdrive water pump pulley
4) Ram Billet aluminum Flywheel

It put down 255.4 hp at 4868 rpms and 297.0 tq at 3900 rpms on a Mustang Dyno with factory tune. (no chip, both numbers corrected)

The engine and exhaust are all original. It just rolled 80,000 miles.

I am happy with those numbers.

Congrats. Those sound like some pretty good numbers for a car that is "supposed" to be 235 hp flywheel stock. I'd be happy with that for sure.

Could you tell much of a difference in power with the mods you have over stock?

Very nice results for a 24-year-old stock Cobra engine with 80K miles, although not really that surprising.

Let's not forget that the GT/LX motors were rated at 225hp at 4200rpm and 300 ft-lb at 3200rpm from '87 thru '92 before Ford mysteriously lowered these numbers to 205hp at 4200rpm and 275 ft-lb at 3000rpm for '93 with barely any mechanical changes. The factory numbers for the Cobra motor (235hp at 4600rpm and 280 ft-lb at 4000rpm) were definitely quite conservative when considering all the differences between the Cobra motors and the GT/LX motors.

Thank you.

The difference over stock is noticeable. It has always rev’d so to speak, but now it revs harder and digs in a bit. (if that makes sense)

My opinion is that the lightweight flywheel changed the personality of the car the most. There are lots of folks online that are opposed to the idea. But, I think if Ford had done this from the factory, no one would think twice about it. Sure it takes a bit more clutch feathering from a stop and the revs drop faster between gears, but it makes the car a sports car. Especially in 1st and 2nd gear… With it, the car always feels on edge and ready. Even with the 3.08s. I would do it again…

I was surprised at the numbers. The dyno operator did say that this dyno was “stingy.”

(P.S.- I also want to say RIP Chris Cornell. We miss you Layne Staley and Scott Weiland…)

Very true. In a lot of minds these cars are GTs with different spoilers...

Where was the timing set for the run, 10 or 14 degrees?

Wanna have even more fun? Change that 3.08 to 3.55 or 3.73!

As Yogi Berra once said, "It's like deja vu all over again." ;)

I had it set on 15 degrees with 93 in the tank.

Yeah, I try to resist the need for more and more speed. My 568 hp coupe cured me for awhile. I do miss that car sometimes though.
