Base Radio Information

Post by Teal&Black#199 »

Hello all,

Looking for information on what the original radio would have looked like and maybe where I can find a good looking original one. I don't have the option for the cd player so I'm assuming it was cassette.

Is it the same as the GT/LX?
What years would interchange and were ones from other Ford's the same?

I'm trying to get the car back to as factory as possible.

Thanks!

1. First photo is a stock 1993 Ford Premium Radio that are installed on Cobra's.
2 Second photo is a 1994 Cougar radio that will fit, but does not sit flush. Notices the different tabs compared to the Cobra radio. They'll work.
3. Third Photo is of two random radio's that I bought to fill the void in my search to find a true 1993 Cobra radio (Very long, hard, expensive process!). They'll also work. But again they did not look good in the dash

If you look at the 1993 radio, you'll notice that it has a metal support underneath the radio. That does not come off. They are there for support, because the radio basically sits on bottom of the center console. The others sit in the dash up high or in the middle.

Most radio's from the 87-93 area with concern to Ford Mustangs will fit. However they will look out of place because the radio's changed, someone correct me here if I'm wrong, in 1993 to what you see in photo #1.

Good Luck. If you need anymore photo's let me know. Also theirs a plastic tab that guides the radio in position on the back of the radio, the original one's where black, where as the ones I bought were all white. Not sure if that's an important issue or not but its, something I noticed during the process.

Hope this helps!

The original is not not for sale. I'm not really sure if the other 3 work. I believe the Cougar one does work, but I'm not sure. I hate to sell it, and not have it work.
If you want the Cougar radio I would sell it, but no guarantee. I believe I paid $150.00.

I'd like to find a premium sound one for a 93 just because that's what's supposed to be there.

Thanks for the insight!

Start a “WTB Stock 93 Radio” in the forum. Guys will come on line if they’re willing to part.
Congrats on 199, nice to see her getting back to stock.
