Power Window repair

Post by 93Cobra#2771 »

Latest project: Driverside power window stuck in the down position.

I've owned #2771 since 1995. 46,xxx miles. The driverside window has always been a little sketchy going up and down. Mainly down. On the way down, it wasn't a smooth movement, tended to kind of speed up and slow down.

Finally, it went down and wouldn't go back up. I could hit the switch and the voltage gauge would jump, so I knew it wasn't the switch. Had to be the motor or something binding.

After doing a little research, apparently it was common for some little plastic pics within the regular assembly to fall apart over time. Likely the culprit, but wouldn't know until I pulled it apart.

So, door panel off, plastic sheeting off (again) and able to access the motor/regulator assembly. Fished it out through the speaker hole (lots of fun and sharp edges). Pulled the assembly apart and sure enough, the little pucs inside assembly were in pieces and binding it all up. You can by an entire rebuild kit for that assembly for $20 or just the pucks for $5 or so. Not knowing what I'd need, I got the kit.

All went back together as it came apart. I cleaned all the gunk and bits and pieces and greased the assembly with the provided grease. No grease in teh puck area, just the outer area.

The assembly was a bit tricky to go back together with the new pucks. A slight interference fit and tight quarters. Used a small plastic prybar to help coax it all back together.

Plugged back in prior to bolting back together and worked like a champ. Previously verified the window would go up and down by hand, so I knew it wasn't binding.

No pics of the process but here are a few of the interior of the assembly with the bits and pieces of the pucks and their carnage.

Might even get the pics to embed in here once I dink around with flick some more. Been a LONG time since I had to img code drop pics, gotten spoiled with other forums allowing directly import of pics.

*Edit - figured it out
*Edit #2 - DO NOT buy a new power motor assembly unless you can verify the motor is bad. The replacement stuff isn't nearly as good as the OEM, and they are very noisy and rough.

Nice write up! Yeah, my high mile teal (Short Circuit) needs some window attention. Passenger side window rolls down from the driver side, but does not roll down on the passenger side. I’m betting it’s just that switch.

Yes, I'd say the switch is the culprit. Likely just needs pulled and light cleaning with some CRC contact cleaner, perhaps even under the button itself. Button it back together with some dielectric grease at the connector and see what happens.

Nice! I have some CRC too. I’ll give that a shot. Thanks

I always cleaned the grease out and added 3 quarter inch nuts, to the spaces,

Ive always heard that can cause issues, as the plastic is the weak link on purpose to fall apart if something gets out of line. However, I almost did it that route until I saw that the pucks were so inexpensive.
