1988 GT Black with Red interior and Gray Bottom

Post by RDLINE1 »

Anyone know if the color combo is rare? I am restoring this one and the two tone doesn't seem to be disired that much, however I cannot find any two tone (blk / gray bottom) anywhere. Is it a low numbered color combo? I am just restoring to resale it, I would repaint it all black if I were to keep the car myself.

All Black?
Or Black with the Gray?
Thanks for any feedback or help. :D

Your post brings back a lot of memories! My '89 GT was originally that exact color combo - black over gray w/red stripe and red interior. When I had that car painted, it was done in all black.

That being said, that color combo is pretty rare. In 1989, there were 40,231 GT hatchbacks produced - 2,598 that were black. Only a portion of those would have had the two-tone exterior w/red interior. How many of those are still around 24 years later?

If you're restoring it to sell, it may be worth it to keep the original color combo.

Probably worth getting a Marti Report on it. It has to be a rare combo.

True. There were 50,282 GT hatchbacks produced in 88 with 12,017 in black. Not sure how many of these were black/grey. Likely to be more black/grey combos than 89 but still less common than all black 24 years later.

Thanks guys for the Numbers! I wish it were an 89 for the numbers..Not sure which way to go on it now... Maybe I'll do a poll later before I spray color on the car. Thanks again. 8)

What are you doing with the rest of the car? Is it going to be all original or have mods? If orig I'd stick with the factory color combo if not I'd go all black.

Oh and one more thing... I think our price point on the resale might play a factor. If its going to be a high dollar car that most likely a collector will pick up I'd stay original. If it'll be less expensive and a driver for someone IMO solid black will be an easier sell.

It's going to be a hard decision on the color. The Car has 120k miles, All Vin tags are in tack, stock clutch/waterpump etc. It seems the only thing changed on the car was the belt and a couple of sensers. The interior is very clean for an 88. Not sure a stang nut like us would pay good money for a car (Non Cobra) that has 120k miles on it. I'm replacing valve cover gaskets/ and plenim gaskets this week, then clutch.. and dissassembly for prep and paint. so a month or two before I shoot the color. I will take all the feed back I can get on this one. The Mustangs that I get aren't this nice..so trying to make it right for the next owner, then let them mod it or enjoy it stock.

I have never seen a combo like that, thought all black cars were all black and no titanium, must be really rare! I think all black is way better!
