how hot does yours run?

Post by drtymike »

On the 93 Cobras, how hot are your cars running? On the temp gauge mine runs on the the o, sometimes n of normal. Doesn't overheat, just seems high to me. What is the operating temp of these cars from the factory with a stock thermostat? Just wondering because I don't recall any of my 5.0s running that high on the gauge, even with a 180 stat.....these cars have a underdrive waterpump pulley right?

i thought the waterpump was over driven and the crank was under driven.

Correct, the water pump pulley is smaller then the regular gt cars. My black car runs in the middle, where my teal runs a little under the middle. Sounds like you may need a new thermostat or the fan clutch isn't working properly. Id start with a thermostat.

Could also possibly be the voltage regulator in the instrument cluster causing it to show hot, turn on the lights and watch the temp guage and see if it goes up quite a bit, if so you need a new regulator for the cluster, they are quite expensive.

Mine raises with the lights on. The temp raises to 180-190 with the lights on though.

Before you go any further, time to put a real gauge on there and see what the temp really is. The stock gauge is notoriously inaccurate...

Yeah, thats what I did. I borrowed a real gauge from a friend. The stock guage, at least on my car in the O and N range of normal is 210-220. Thats what my car was running temp wise. I replace the thermostat to a 180 degree made no difference. I then swapped the fan clutch, made no difference. Flushed the radiator next, seemed to have some oyster like build up on the inside. Still made no difference. The car would sit and idle at this point at 175-180 forever, but once you got going down the road it would creep back up to 210 or so and not come back down. Today I figured out what I was over looking. Anyone want to guess what i did next? I can drive around now in the 180- 190 range.

Possibly cleaned out all the bugs that are in the radiator fins! people always tend to over look that part, they seem to clog full of bugs and small rocks, not letting the air to flow through. I normally clean mine at least once a year, seems to keep the temp down,

Also clean out the a/c condensor, they clog up as well

Correct sir. With only 35k on the car I did not even think of doing this first, lol. But yeah, a bunch of bugs and dirt impeeding air flow. Sometimes its the simple things that get overlooked huh...

I pulled the radiator out and blasted some water thought the fins, there was a ton of bugs and dirt stuck in them.

Also, its good to invest in an aluminum radiator, on my 93 the temp needle doesn't go past the third line on the gauge. It keeps it cool

Okay, how hard is it to swap rads? I mean, a straight swap. LRS has an aluminum one they say is a straight swap for $200. Good deal? Decent radiator? http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/ite ... m-Radiator
My Cobra looks backwards. He's wondering where everyone is...

I don't know about this radiator but the swap is super simple. I would replace the hoses and thermostat while you're at it. I'd say 2 hours max to do it all.
Oh and for a lower cost aluminum I know that Mishimoto's quality is good and you won't be paying fluidine prices.
