Fricken Steering!!
Fricken Steering!!
Still can't get the damn steering shaft down far enough to connect to the rack! The mechanic guy ven came on saturday and couldn't get it. Now he says I'll have an issue with the knuckle where the steering wheel shaft meets the secondary shaft bumping the header. WTF? These BBK shorties were made for this car, meaning all of this was taken into consideration. Sounds like my mechanic is a clown. However, I still can't get the damn thing down. Where exactly is this thing supposed to extend to mate up...at the top near the firewall or at the rag joint? I know this should not be this hard...it's one fricken bolt and a shaft...how difficult should this really be??

Nope, no cuts or anything. This shaft fit on without issue with long tubes on it, so not quite sure why it won't fit with shorties that are supposed to be bolt on!
Should I just cut my losses here and buy an aftermarket shaft? It may be the answer I need and will be a lot easier to get on there from the look of it.

Is the stem for the rack and pinion the same on both racks? The flaming river may have a shorter stem for hook up and may have to order a longer one. The knuckles can be removed I thought, so you could use from one shaft to another.

Here's the previous thread.buddha wrote:Am I missing a piece of the story? Was the factory shaft removed to get the header on and now you can't get it back on? I've got a FR shaft on the red car........not much to these setups, aftermarket or stock.

This is the factory steering shaft I am trying to get back on. It was disconnected from the rack to install the headers and now I cannot get it to go all the way down on the rack so it can be tightened down. As I understand it the shaft at the firewall should extend out enough for the clamp to go on the rack, but I cannot get the damn thing to budge!
Looks so simple...can't believe I am having so much of a problem with it!

So it's just a matter of beating the piss out of it until it moves. Should I beat it at the knuckle closest to the firewall or at the rag joint? Am I extending the shaft that goes through the firewall or the rag joint itself, since the shaft connected to the rag joing does not extend at all?buddha wrote:Ah, I see. Sometimes they're just a bit stubborn and the lack of easy access makes it even harder. Sounds like it's just a bit stuck. It will reach, I promise.
Sorry for all of the frustration...it shouldn't be this hard. And the car has been sitting for four months now, and this is the last item I need to put back together to make it driveable again, so I'm getting a bit impatient.
