Air bag light flashing after radio install and dead battery

Post by Phistry810 »

Ok guys, my airbag light is flashing now. I've heard this is common in these cars but it drives me nuts. I recently changed the radio out and also had a dead battery. While changing the radio, I came across a blue wire that looks like it has a 8 prong connector (4 on top and 4 in bottom). I'm not sure what that is but it's unhooked and I'm not sure where it goes. Any help to get that light to stop blinking would be very appreciated. Thanks!!

That sounds like the amp wire that plugs into the back of the stereo, is it like a 1/2" square with metal on it? There sould be a socket for it on the corner of radio, and it might already have a little black jumper connector in it.

You're right, that's the amp wire. Any idea what my air bag problem might be? Is there anyway just to make the light not flash?

Turn key on and count the flashes, it will flash a code, like 3 flashes then short pause 2 flashes, it will repeat it 3 times. Count it and replyback. Could be from internal battery being dead.

It is 32. My main battery was all the way dead a few days ago. What can I do to fix it? The flashing is killing me.

32 means
a) your airbag is blown
b) your airbag is bad
c) your airbag is disconnected
d) your clockspring inside the steering column is bad
e) your wiring from the diagnostic monitor to the airbag is bad somewhere

while installing the stereo did you disconnect and wiring under the column or under the center of dash behind console? It is very unlikely the airbag went bad on its own, and i never seen a clock spring break just sitting there, if all your connections look good , let me know ill post up testing proceedure.

Honestly, I'd rather die than take that radio back out. It gave me the hardest time of any radio I've ever done. It could be the connection. Would the radio have to be removed to check it? Can you post a pic of the harness or explain it? Im sure its a wiring thing. if the radio has to be removed, anyway to jusy make the light stop blinking? Thank you!

There was 3 harnesses that all looked the same. 1 was for the radio, one was for the amp bypass, an another that was disconnected. Would it look just like the radio harness? Also just replaced my carpet, something could've happened during that process as well.

diagnostic module is behind the radio , kinda below the a/c control, it is a blue box, with two connectors. make sure none of the wires are pulled loose from the connector itself. you may be able to see the connectors from the side of the console without pulling the radio. usually that code ends up being a bad clockspring, but check below the column for a unhooked connector, If you want i think you could unplug the blue diagnostic monitor and you would have no light , and hopefully no buzzer.

I REALLY appreciate the info. Anyway you could post some pics of what all of this stuff looks like? There are a lot of wires and connectors back there. If I could just get the light to turn off I would be happy. It looks like I can get to most of it from the side of the console though and it would be nice if I could just fix it the right way. Anyways, a picture would be greatly appreciated if possible. Thanks!

here is the clock spring , it is mounted directly behind the steering wheel, and the yellow jacketed wiring is for the airbag, it has a small 2 wire black connector,

and the blue diagnostic module (that has the 2 connectors behind radio)

Thanks man! Any idea what the actual harness looks like that plugs into the blue module? I am thinking thats my problem.

Also, $129 for a clock spring!

if you look behind front edge of drivers side console near back of radio , you will see the blue module, it looks like one light grey connector and one black ,hard to get a pic, this was best i could get with my phone..
