93 Cobra rear end specs

Post by JohnLynch »

I have been searching the net trying to find out what exactly was different between a 93 Cobra rear end and the Gts/Lx's if anything at all. I know they came with 3:08 Gears

I believe the '93 Cobra rear was borrowed from the '87-'88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Disk brakes with longer axles.

I think your right esco, how big were the disc brakes on the rear?

John, I found this info in the 'Technical Data' section of the site.
Rear brakes were the same as the ones used on the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Axles were 3/4 longer on each side and required special offset wheels. Axle part numbers are F3ZZ-4234-A. Rotors in the rear measured 10.07" in diameter and were 0.945" thick. Part number is F3ZZ-2C026-A. Calipers in the rear were manufactured by Varga for Ford and were a single piston design. Part number is F3ZZ-2552-A (RH) and F3ZZ-2553-A (LH). Parking brake cables were changed for 1993 and the 93 Cobra also had specific parking brake cables for the rear disc. Part number is F3ZZ-2A635-A for both left and right sides.

The housing is the same as a non cobra, axles , rotors, calipers and brackets are from turbo bird brake cables will work from any 94 - stang. A complete 87 bird rear will work but the quad shock brackets are longer and can trim and they have 3:55 gears.

Look for rebuilt rear calipers from Morse. I think they recently went out of business, but I got a set that had the Ford and the Varga logo in the mold and the entire assembly included, loaded with pads. The part number is Morse P4508, I believe. High quality rebuild in the original casting.

Latemodel Restoration has brackets that should work, I think. Check the offset, though.

I know a couple of fab shops through my work. If I could find a good mechanical drawing of those, or an example piece or pair, I could see how much they would charge to make a set. It wouldn't be cheap, but we give them a fair amount of work and they would at least hold the cost down a bit.

Any ideas on where to get an engineering drawing?

I will see what I can find on the internet. There are some Ford part drawings here & there that I have seen in the past, not sure of the Ford source though - they have always been posted by individuals. Might be cool to get some made and sell them to cover the costs of having an extra set for use. Never thought of being a repro supplier before

On a side note, both Saleen and Factory Five made those same brackets EXCEPT they were made to fit the standard length fox body axles.

In other words, if you want to do standard offset foxbody wheels, you can swap to regular fox body axles and use the relocation brackets for the calipers. Just a bit of trivia for you...
