75mm Pro-M MAF sensor

Post by escogt »

Anyone run a 75mm Pro-M MAF in their '93 Cobra? If so, does it really make any difference in performance over the stock piece? Is it worth the money?

Hey Mike, a close friend of mine back in the late '90s bought a stock '93 Cobra with just full aftermarket exhaust. I helped him tune it up when he first got it (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters, etc.). He also swapped out the stock MAF for an old school (new at the time) cast 77mm Pro-M meter.

The car loved that meter! :drive:

No, it didn't add 50rwhp but it most definitely made for a harder pulling top end, better throttle response and a noticeable seat of the pants difference. The GT-40 engine package is a great setup, but it's choked off by the factory 70mm MAF. Yes, the factory meter measures out to 70mm but when you take into account how much of a restriction the sampling tube column is causing (it is placed right in the middle of the meters flow path) I can't see the Cobra meter flowing much more than a standard 55mm 5.0-HO meter.

With all that being said....I'm currently on the hunt for one of those old school 77mm meters!

The responsiveness in that set-up had more to do with the full aftermarket exhaust than the 77mm MAF.

Swapping out the stock MAF in combination with other mods is definitely recommended for less restrictive airflow (I'm running an 80mm MAF in my supercharged Cobra). However, if all you're planning to do is swap the MAF to an otherwise stock engine/exhaust set-up, the very minimal difference in performance is not worth the cost.

IMO, the most bang for the buck (and easily reversible) modification one can do on these cars for those who want to keep them otherwise stock is to switch the stock 3.08 gears for 3.55 or 3.73 gears. This simple change makes a noticeable difference in performance in an otherwise stock Cobra.

Maybe.

My car is also all stock outside of a full aftermarket exhaust system (it actually has the exact same exhaust setup as my buddies old '93 I mentioned) and is nowhere near as peppy in the lower RPM range and as hard pulling in the upper..as my friends old '93. I bought my car 100% stock...and upon driving the car for the first time after the new exhaust system was installed the soft low end torque issue it had (compared to a regular 5.0-HO) before the exhaust swap was exacerbated further.

All I know is Marcus's old '93 with Motorsport shorties, off-road h, Flowmaster cat-back, and a 77mm Pro-M meter ran really good! 8)

Don't just stop with the 77mm Pro-M! Add a Vortech, upgraded fuel pump and upgraded injectors as well. I guarantee you'll have no low end torque issues (or upper end or middle) and your Cobra will run REALLY REALLY good!! :headbang:
