stock cobra with 34,000 miles... supercharge or 3.73 gears?

Post by Dixie789456 »

Looking for a bit more giddy up out of the pony. I don't want a lot of mods done to the car. I know 3.73's would be cheaper, but a supercharger would look and sound real nice. I also like the stock 3.08's for driving. Which one would you go with? I would be getting the vortech v3 sci 5-6 psi kit.

BOTH!

Does your car have any exhaust mods? If not you'll want to add in the cost of stepping up to a more performance oriented setup when bolting on a blower kit. More air in means you gotta be able to let more air out. You'll also need to address the factory fuel system (injectors and in-tank pump at the bare minimum) along with a tune (FMUs are junk) when adding boost. You'll spend a few thousand dollars to properly supercharge your car when it is all said and done.

Gears can be bought and installed for somewhere around $400-500. Visually the car remains stock appearing but feels stronger throughout the entire RPM range. Gears are always there, don't heat soak, and don't throw belts.

I do have an o/r h pipe and flowmaster exhaust. Those are the only mods it has as of right now. I an not planning on changing injectors or anything else. If I do go with the vortech system I am going to use it as is with the fmu... I don't need more than 5-6 psi and it will never see a track or rpms above 5000-5500 rpms in light spirited driving on the street. I am not into the boy racer thing anymore, but I have always wanted a supercharged mustang. My main concern is value of the car! I don't want to do anything that might depreciate it.

do both, get the gears first, then when that starts getting old, do the supercharger!

Save EVERY stock piece that comes off the car and enjoy it. Bang for the buck, it's hard to beat 3.73's. However, 3.73s might be a bit steep for a blown car. A lot of people will stay at 3.27 or so for blown cars.

Either way you go, however, is gonna be fun.

I've got 373's and Vortec and she handles the oval and auto cross perfectly. Cruises 70 mph at 2200. Just a little insight!! Oldernu

Lots of good advice above. With 34K miles, the bolt on equipment you're considering will not negatively affect the value of your ride that much, especially if you save ALL the stock equipment that you would be removing. Besides, you'd be surprised what a tastefully modded Cobra is worth these days.

If you had an ultra low mileage Cobra, I might hesitate to modify it. As that's not a concern, I would highly recommend both gears and the blower (along with the others mods mentioned by 1986Browns that are a must with a proper blower install). IMO, you will regret installing a blower w/o changes to the fuel system or FMU. Regarding gears, I'm running 3.55s on my ride. They are a nice middle ground between the stock 3.08s and the 3.73s.

Doing the gears then a blower is a nice way to go. With the gears, you'll enjoy the quicker revs and slightly better acceleration. At least for a little while. With the blower, I guarantee you will be absolutely thrilled with your car's performance . The extra power, especially in a car as light as our Cobras, totally transforms the car. The sound of the motor and the wickedly quick acceleration of a supercharged Mustang never gets old.

Happy motoring! :drive:

And I thought 34,000 would be considered low miles these days?

3:73 and a blower is no problem. I don't hesitate one bit taking mine on the highway....

If you don't want much boost, you should look at the Kenne Bell (spelling?) super-charger as most of the boost will be low RPM, unlike the 5-6 PSI Vortech.... Just something to think about.

^^^

Sounds like Dixie wants to keep the car as stock as possible, in which case the KB is not optimal because it changes a lot more under the hood than a Vortech V3.

Very true. I am not looking to change out any motor parts. They are all stock and have never been removed!
