stereo issues

Im having some problems with my factory (i think its the factory) radio cassettes player

it turns on, all the functions on the radio work (all buttons do what they are supposed to) but initially there was no sound other than popping in the speakers

I took it out disconnected it and reconnected the connectors and it started working (kind of) the sound seems weak then it would all of the sudden get better then worse sporadically, I wiggled the wires to see if it might be a loose connection but that test was not conclusive. it didn't seem like wiggling the wires changed anything

is there a factory amp that is separate from the unit itself? and if so where is it located? is it easy to get to? Im thinking it might be that.. the back of the stereo has two connectors one is the speakers and power I thought but there is another that looks like a CD changer connector I'm thinking this is the amp connection?? but not sure

any way any help would be appreciated

They are both notorious for having issues, kinda trial and error process changing each piece to find the culprit.

Do we love our Fox bodies in spite of or because of Ford's late 80s/early 90s build quality issues?

Keep us updated on the stereo issues. I'm having trouble with mine as well. It makes a popping sound through the speakers only when turning up or down the volume. And the driver side speakers quit working with less than 50% volume. Otherwise all the buttons work fine.

Supposedly there is a guy on EBay the refurbishes them but I haven't been able to locate him.

The popping is probably the radio, the guy on eBay goes by rooster6969 or something similar.

This is who fixed mine. Even though he is somewhat local, I mailed my unit to him and he sent it back after it was repaired. He got rid of the popping and got my CD player working again. All good!

my friend asked me so hows the new stang you just picked up? (referring to my cobra)

I told him when I sit in it, hold the shifter in my hand and start the car(that distinct noise and feel of a 5.0 liter coming to life) it takes me back to the 90's

I also told him I took it out for a drive the other, it rattles everywhere, squeaks from all the joints, the whole car shakes like crazy, its slow as turd, the build quality sucks so all in all IT WAS FANTASTIC!!!

quick update

well I sent out the stereo about 3 months ago and still have not gotten it back. I called twice once about a month ago and they said it will be ready by the end of the week and I called again today and got pretty much the same answer. Im not in a hurry to get the stereo back I just hope its fixed well having to wait for it this long. will update you once I get it back and install it, now

to stir the pot a little I couldn't find a black cobra so I ended up buying this 87 Iroc

my first car was a 86 crown victoria LTD ex undercover car. my second car was 88 fox body followed by another fox a 91. then I got a 69 boss 302 and a couple of ford GTs after that. Now I have never owned a GM product in my life and in the last two weeks I bought two..
