Oil and Filter recommendation

Post by SVT4942 »

I'm going to put some fresh oil in the 93. I don't plan on driving her much, at all. I'd like to get Royal Purple.

What do you all run in yours? Synthetic?
What weight?
What filter? Motorcraft FL-1A?

I don’t drive mine much either, but use Mobile 1 in it. I use the specified viscosity (don’t recall what it is right now). As for filters, I usually use Wix or Mobile 1 filters in my cars.

One thing to consider with these aging Foxes... my old 89 leaked quite a bit of oil. It sat for a long time and the gaskets dried out. A mechanic told me that synthetic oils tend to leak more since they are runnier and will seep out of the tiniest of cracks/holes. Conventional oil does this less.

I use synthetic in all of my vehicles and after my 89 gets a restoration, it will get synthetic too (again).

I was thinking the same thing, to not run synthetic.

So what does everyone else put in for a car that sits almost 365 days?

X3.

The mechanic Goose mentioned is wrong about synthetic oil. There is another thread on here that discusses the old wives tale about synthetic oil being bad for the seals, etc.

Thanks guys. I'll just stick with what you all are doing, Mobil 1 10w30 with a Motorcraft FL1A oil filter.
Not sure when I'll do it this winter, but it's good time to do it.

For me, a key detail of the look of my cars engine bays is to have a motorcraft oil filter and battery. Maybe stupid, to some, but it's a key detail for me (Im a stock purist, I confess). I took delivery of a fox this summer it had a brand new royal purple filter on it. I changed that filter as fast as I could. I use either motorcraft, or Mobil 1 full synthetic, depending on the car.

I agree with this. I have swapped out perfectly good batteries with Ford versions on cars I’ve bought simply for appearance. If the filter is something you can see from the top, I do the same... I very well might have a Ford filter on my 93... I don’t remember what I used last time.

I go to Wal Mart get a motorcraft filter, and Walmart supertech synthetic oil. Use in everything I own.
