1993 COBRA R SUSPENSION CLUNKING!!!!
Have a low-mileage (500-miles) Cobra R that I just got and am sorting out......When I go over ruts or seams in pavement, I get a loud Metal on Metal clunking noise from the rear suspension......I have set Koni shocks at about half way on compression, but haven't adjusted the rebound......Anyone out there have a clue?????
Thanks
Sandy

I’d start by making sure nothing is loose under the back of the car (sway bar, control arms, ect…). It might sound silly but you might want to check the spare-tire well to see if the jack and tire wrench are secure.

does it have the rubber isolators between the rear springs and the body? look at the top of the rear spring.

If I got a hold of a Cobra R, you better believe I'd put some miles on it. They probably wouldn't be easy miles either!

I'd definitely drive it more than I would leaving it in the garage

Re: 1993 COBRA R SUSPENSION CLUNKING!!!!
I don't drive the car daily, but since it has a 1000-mile break-in, it certainly won't hurt the car or value to drive it occasionally....I had a "wrapper" 93 R that was trailered to EVERYTHING, and it was no fun....That kind of super-low mileage car ends up in permanent collections, and are never driven....This time I will drive it to local shows, trailer out of state.......
By the way, I checked the rear-suspension again, and everything is buttoned-down, isolators are in place, no evidence of wear/damage....My thought is now to adjust the upper (rebound) side of the Koni's, it could be the problem......The factory usually sets the shocks at the lowest (least compression, rebound) at the factory.....If they are loose at the top, it would explain the deafening noise, especially in the cabin rear......
I will let you all know......

Are the shocks shot? They have been known to leak over time. Explain when it happens, over bumps, smooth flat road, under acceleration, braking?cobramustang1993 wrote:I don't drive the car daily, but since it has a 1000-mile break-in, it certainly won't hurt the car or value to drive it occasionally....I had a "wrapper" 93 R that was trailered to EVERYTHING, and it was no fun....That kind of super-low mileage car ends up in permanent collections, and are never driven....This time I will drive it to local shows, trailer out of state.......

My R makes all kinds of clunks, mainly due to all the rubber was replaced with spherical bearings. The lack of sound dentoner will make it louder than a comparable street version too.
