I bet if it was well taken care of it still runs well. These things were built to run forever. I had a 71 Bronco with a 302 and it had close to 400k when I sold it 20 years ago, my Friend who bought it, still has it and it is still running on the same original motor.
X2. Change the oil and coolant regularly and don't beat on the 302 too hard and it will last a long time. Keeping up with the body is a little tougher, especially if you don't have a garage to put it in.

Beat on (verb) - (1) driving one's Mustang under full throttle acceleration nearly every chance one gets; (2) frequent trips to one's local track to get those ET slips; (3) spending more time with the tach needle above 5000 rpm than below it.
While I certainly recommend all of the above every now and then, remember - all things in moderation.
