Another question...Exhaust.

Post by big frank »

Although I have a cat back Flowmaster system on the 93, I noticed that the exhaust before the Flomasters has 4 cats. Is this normal? Maybe only on California cars? Seems weird to me, although my smog check report shows that my car runs really clean. :?:

Yes, 4 cats were standard on all 5.0s from at least 87-93.

I just gutted my front two and deleted my rears as shown in my exhaust thread. Sounds much better for now.

Big Frank, with your "cat back" is it just after the stock H pipe? So basically just two muffs and tailpipes?

Can't get away with taking the cats off here in Cali. Apparently it's just muffs and tail pipes. If the stock H-pipe has a smaller pipe going between both sides, then what I have is a stock H-pipe.

I going to buy an H-pipe to eliminate that problem. I hate to gut the original ones since I want to keep them.

The way I figure is if someone else buys this car I don't care about if it can pass emissions for them or not. That is their problem and they can fix it when they buy the car if they are worried about it. We don't have emissions tests here in CO anymore anyhow.

it doesn't work that way here. Sell is responsible for a current smog cert before selling.

Wow, never heard of that. I just bought my car in Cali and they didn't need it to reg it here. Besides that, from my experience when a new owner buys a car they just go down and get a new emissions report for $25 themselves.

You probably didn't need one for Colorado. But I just bought a car here in cali, and it's staying here in Cali. We have to have a smog check every two years, but when buying a car, the smog cert has to be less than 90 day old. The guy I bought my car from had to, by law, get a fresh smog on the car to sell it. The guy you bought your car from in Cali just didn't disclose that to you, or you didn't care as you don't have to have one in Colorado.

I got burned on a car a few years back by not making the guy smog before I bought. I bought the car, and it wouldn't smog. While at the smog center, the computer went bad and I had to buy a new (used) one for $400. I finally got it smogged, but was in it nearly $500 before it happened. Had I known about the law, I wouldn't have had to got though all that BS and the seller would have had to do it before the sell. I didn't know, and he didn't say. I'm sure he knew, as he was a mechanic. My bad I guess...

It sucks that it had to happen, but nobody will be able to burn you again. I would just consider it as a lesson learned.

A lesson learned by experience is a life lesson. It happens...
