Why did they even make 9 non clearcoat cars?

maybe they ran out of clear and had to wait for their order to arrive, meanwhile they painted 9 reds?

Could be, cause I read that all 93 lightnings were non clear

I am not sure what happened but when I ordered mine in November of '92, it was specifically listed that red would be non-clear coated and the black and teal would be clear coated. At the time, I was happy about that because clear coats were new and I didn't want some "new" untested paint technology on a car that I intended to keep for the long haul. When it arrived in April with clear coat, I was actually very disappointed. I am very happy now the way it worked out though.
I was told that red was a difficult color to develop a clear coat for so it was the last color in general to have it and they figured it out between the time the literature was printed and when the car was painted. Don't know if it's true or not, just sayin'.

Number 12 was repainted in the past w/ a clear coat. Someone made a big mistake.

Bought it about a year ago from a customer of mine who heard me talking to another customer about her LX. I told him I couldn't afford it and he said to make him an offer. About a year later he said he got his wife's permission to sell it to me and I picked it up that night not knowing anything about it except it was red. He knew it was a low production number based on the production date and new a lot about cobras. He was just glad it was going to someone who'd appreciate it.
