White "X" on air box from factory

Question for the 93 Cobra gurus... I know I've read here before that the 93 Cobras came from the factory with a white "X" on the air filter box signifying a filter was installed in the box. I just toured a collector's massive collection to include an ultra-low mile 93 Cobra (less than 20 miles). He bought it new and said it didn't have the white X on the box. I mentioned they came with it, but he assured me he didn't clean it off. I tried finding reference on the forum here about it and could not.

He also has the last Fox body Mustang made, which did have the X, but his 93 R model did not. Does anyone have a reference that states these cars came with an X?

Thanks for the help.

I have seen an owned lower mileage cars both with and without the "X". Seems to me it is more of a paint type marking in white than a traditional chalk marking. Also usually seems to resemble a crude "T" than an "X" to me. I have a lower mileage 93 Yellow vert that does not have the marking.

All of the 93 R's didn't get an X. All 93 Cobras had an X. Some dealers when prepping the car removed the x.

Sounds logical, but he claimed the dealer didn't prep his 93 regular Cobra. Is there any documentation about this marking or is it just known from observation?

Good stuff guys, thank you!

I got to see 2 93R's at a dealer today and neither had the "X" like mentioned. The guy also had a 95R and a 00R. Nice cars!

I just contacted the collector of the 93. He said his car left the factory without the white-X on the filter box. He contacted the dealer when he ordered the car and told them to do zero prep on the car. It's still a "wrapper car" after all these years. He took these pictures today that show nothing was done to prep the car and there is no "X" on the filter box. This is a standard black 93 Cobra:

So the moral of the story is X doesn't always mark the spot.

Is that a black on black option car, any more details on it?

I believe so. It's part of a large collection.

I spied a yellow no stripe Ford GT. That is a very very rare combo.

Yes! It's the first Ford GT I've sat in. They are waaaay smaller on the inside than I imagined. Very cool though.

And that interior is downright huge compared to the new one.
