Rd teal under hood paint formula?

Post by 93#2837 »

I went to pick up the under hood paint last week and was told by my 2 supply places that they don't have the mixing formula. The only thing they showed was the outside rd base/clear formula. It's been a long time since I paint the last teal engine bay, but I thought it was a different mix being single stage. Does anyone have info on this? Thanks

I dont know the code, but have gotten it from ppg. Its in the paint book behind the exterior colors, with accent, wheel, and stripe colors. Had a guy with doupont try to tell me underhood was the same as exterior without clear, he was wrong!

I have a can at home, I will get the paint code off it. It is not he same color as the exterrior, no where close, LOL. And red cars use Torch red under the hood, Code is D3, it is fresh in my head cause I just sprayed a bottom of a hood. It is also a single stage color, enamel

Why did Ford use a different color for engine bays? What about the black cars and the regular fox bodies?

regular basecoat color with no clear , is dry and porous, soaks up oil , gease , hard to clean, this is speacil single stage color. I remember a while back on svtperfomance , a guy named Mark that works for ford svt , was arguing that it was the same paint , he knew cause he worked there,! yeah he worked there and didnt know crap about what he was talking about. the under hood color is a little more pastel looking , very little or no metalic, no clear, and a lower gloss.

I was almost certain it was different. To me it looks like turquoise. Both places I went to sold nason/DuPont products. We looked through everything book they had and it didn't show it. I will try the PPG supplier next. Aaron, if you can find the code for me would be great.

OK that all makes sense, so the teal & red cars use a different color enamel paint. Thats good to know.
We were always under the impression that this was just a thin coat of body color less clear

So assume the black Cobras and then the regular fox bodies used different paint also?

Nope, Black cars used Black under hood, just single stage, not clear coated, as for other Fox cars, they also used different under hood colors. Like my Son's 93 GT, the car is Silver, but the underhood color is a light Gray color, single stage no matallic.

Also the callypso cars have the same underhood color as the teal cobra's, reef blue cars have a dark green underhood color. PPG used to have alisting of all under hood colors on the car, this carried forward pretty much on all years, except for the 01 Bullitt, 00R, and the 03/04 Cobras.

Even the 96 Mystic Cobra was black under the hood. Ford did lots of silly things with underhood paint, you would think it would be more work to paint them different colors.
